The Lenten season, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, and Easter are times for introspection, penitence, meditation, sacrifice,
fasting, and giving thanks as we reflect upon God's act in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.
Our personalities for March, whose biographies will be shared during Bible study and preaching, are significant characters
in the life of Jesus Christ. Their stories are laden with centuries of bias, lack of balance in format, gender suppression, and
cultural bias by Jewish and Christian writers, mainly because they were of Canaanite, Moabite, and Hittite origin. During
their lifetimes, women had no rights; “a man had to respect”. Their destinies were in the hands of fathers, older brothers,
uncles, and nearest of kin. They lived with the expectation of marriage, bearing sons, and maintaining a domestic household.
All the women of focus this March, Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba, are listed in the genealogies of Christ Jesus (St.
Matthew 1.1-5). We will also meet the first evangelist in the person of Mary Magdalene (St. John 20.1- 8), who was the first
person to see, hear, and touch the resurrected Christ.
These women were not from royal families; they were wise, caring, hardworking businesswomen who demonstrated
compassion, making indelible contributions to the Kingdom of God and the Christian Church.
